Students with a documented Auditory Impairment (AI) should be immediately scheduled for an Intervention Assistance Team (IAT) meeting. Evaluation for possible special education services should not be delayed by a Response to Intervention (RTI) proces


  1. The HISD audiology department has assessed and identified a child as having a hearing loss. The HISDaudiology department will contact manager of the program for students with auditory impairments.

OR

  1. A referral is made by the campus via the AI/VI Referral Request with an audiological report or without an audiological report. If an audiological report is not available, an appointment can be made with the HISD audiology department at 713-556-7890. Once the report has been obtained, the manager of the program is contacted.
  2. The AI certified itinerant teacher assigned to the school is contacted by the manager of the program.
  3. The AI certified itinerant teacher will make contact with the IAT/CRC (Intervention Assistance Team/Campus Referral Committee) chairperson and the classroom teacher at the student’s home campus. The classroom teacher is given the S.I.F.T.E.R. (Screening Instrument for Targeting Education Risk) to complete.
  4. After the SIFTER is reviewed, the AI certified itinerant teacher will contact the school to verify evaluation for consideration for the disability condition of auditory impairment and a referral meeting with parents needs to be scheduled or whether the campus might want to pursue a Section 504 plan for accommodations. The campus based team, including the AI certified Itinerant teacher, will attend the meeting to review the referral information.
  5. If the student is referred for special education testing or is already receiving special education services, the AI certified itinerant teacher or manager of the program contacts the audiology department and requests an otological exam. The audiological form is sent to the nurse consultant and an otological exam is scheduled with an ENT. The AI certified itinerant teacher completes a communication assessment . The campus based Evaluation Specialist completes the Full Individual Evaluation (FIE) for students not currently receiving special education services.
  6. The AI multidisciplinary team will review information from the otological, the audiological, the communication assessment and the draft of the FIE to make recommendations related to AI services. The campus based Evaluation Specialist will receive information from the AI multidisciplinary team regarding AI services for the student. The AI certified itinerant teacher completes the otological, audiological and communication assessment for the FIE and EASYIEP system.
  7. The AI certified itinerant teacher must attend the ARD and will review all information related to the AI disability condition and will discuss recommended services.
